The Problem of Profanity posted 01.15.12

Scripture Reading: James 3:8-11

There exists an evil in our society today that has grown to epic proportions in both the world and also in the church.  It is that of profanity.  It is not uncommon as you walk through any store to hear a conversation that uses the vilest of words.  The Bible says in Ezekiel 44:23 And they shall teach my people the difference between the holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.

Where has this problem with profanity come from?  I believe it comes from these sources:

  • The Devil: He wants us all to be unclean like himself.
  • The World: TV, movies, books, and radio have changed so much in the last few years that now only the most vile and perverted words are considered publicly taboo.
  • The Flesh: It is fashionable to “push the envelope” to seem brave, rash, and irreverent.  In reality all you are being is a pawn of the Devil to spread filth and to degrade yourself.
  • The Habit of the Home: Sadly, many children and teens first hear the curses of profanity in their homes.

What Can be Done to Remedy this Problem in our lives?  Here is a good start:

  1. Start with Self: Take a stand that you will not allow the Devil’s words in your mouth.  If you have already started using profanity then ask God to forgive you and help you to stop.
  2. Turn off the Faucet: You will never come clean if you constantly fill your ears and mind with swear words.  You must get rid of the music, movies, shows, and even friends that use swearing.
Establish a New Habit: It’s not easy, but it can be done with God’s help.  Learn to express yourself with good and Godly words.
